don lemon. i am live in washington, d.c., very special coverage of president barack obama's inauguration. thank you so much for joining us on this historic weekend. worship was a key part of the day for the first family today. president and mrs. obama attended services with their daughters at the metropolitan african methodist episcopal church. they celebrated slain civil rights leader, reverend martin luther king jr. at one of the most historic churches in washington. and tomorrow is of course, the main event. some 800,000 people expected to pack the west front of the capitol to watch president obama publicly take his oath of office. the president has already started his second term, he took the oath earlier today in an intimate swearing-in ceremony in the blue room of the white house. i want you to take a look. >> please raise your right hand and repeat after me. >> i, barack hussein obama, do solemnly swear. >> that i will execute the office of president to the united states faithfully. >> that i will execute -- >> faithfully the office of president of the united states

volunteers joined him. tomorrow president obama will take the oath of office in a private white house ceremony. monday, hundreds of thousands are expected as he takes the oath on the capitol steps. former presidents clinton and carter will be present at that ceremony monday. not attending former president george h.w. bush and his father, former president bush, the younger bush staying at home because his father is sick. the president was just released from the hospital after an extended illness. also today a big development on the debt limit. a vote is scheduled for next week and we'll dig in to those details later in the show. first, though, the stars are coming out for that national day of service that we just mention mentioned. eva longoria who is an inaugural committee co-chair. and chelsea clinton were one of the first speakers at the event. angela basset is also there and we'll talk to her later here on the show. the president also -- he also spoke at belleville elementary school. take a listen. >> not so much inauguration when we think about the fact that this is dr. king's bir

have a category called obama's top promises. you can look at those and you can see that i think his record of fulfilling them is not quite as high as overall. you make a good point -- some of his promises were sweeping and thematic and others were very specific. there were two that were lighthearted -- we included two promises like that. one was his promise during the campaign that he would buy his daughter as a puppy which is a promise kept in the other was that he would fight for a college football playoff system which we also raided a promise kept indeed, you could say this is the aggregate and you need to look in on the more narrow numbers. we published an article yesterday but we welcome anybody who wants to tally them up in different ways and provide an analysis. all promises are not created equal. host: we are looking at the top promises on politifact - tell us more about compromise. guest: the credit for workers is a tax credit that was part of the economic stimulus originally, he sought $500 and i think ultimately, law was less than that. that was a classic compromise that

, president obama plans to introduce legislation next week calling for the biggest changes to gun laws this country has seen in two decades. yesterday the president surrounded by children who wrote him letters after newtown urged congress to take action on a number of proposals including universal background checks for anyone buying a gun, restoring the ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting magazines to ten rounds, giving law enforcement additional tools to prosecute gun crimes and improving the mental health system for young people. >> so let's look at all of those items up there. richard wolffe, every one of them has overwhelming support of the american people. universal background checks. 85% of americans support that. restoring a ban on milita military-style assault weapons. that's a 60/40 proposition now. limiting magazines to ten rounds. almost 7 in 10 americans support that. additional tools for law enforcement. you know that's got to be an 80/20, 90/10 issue. the same with improving mental health services. i bring these numbers up only to say, once again, that my r

of the public statements we have seen since president barack obama said it was time for meaningful action to reduce gun violence, because what we have seen this many people argue the president is taking away our rights. i call this confusion, because many people apparently have not been reading the court cases that interpret the second amendment and tell us what it means. as larry and i argue in our contribution, the most popular proposals being considered today are likely constitutional. that is not to say there are not any questions about any of them, but they are likely to be upheld by the supreme court should they be enacted. from background checks to restrictions on sale of high- capacity magazines and even a ban on assault weapons, we think it is likely the supreme court will uphold these provisions. in defense of those who do seem confused about the nature of our second amendment rights, the supreme court has not done a great job of clarifying what is the scope of our second amendment rights. as most of you know, in 2008, the supreme court held that the second amendment protects th
